The project to implement nature-based solutions (NBS) at the CINIBA in Katowice involves replacing impervious surfaces with mineral surfaces and providing shade using trees and pergolas.
To create shaded paths, we design pergolas covered in ivy.
We design flower meadows in places where it is not technically possible to construct rain gardens and where waterproof surfaces can be dispensed with.
To provide shade, improve water retention and absorb CO₂, we have planted 131 trees and shrubs.
They are designed to intercept part of the rainwater flowing from the parking lot before it goes to the rainwater sewage system. They were located in places where there are no underground networks and near rainwater drainage inlets due to the ease of making emergency overflows.

What results have we obtained?
We have improved users’ thermal comfort by installing pergolas, tress and shrubs.
We have reduced the volume of water discharged into the sewerage system by approximately 42%.
We have increased the biodiversity potential across an area of 7,500 m².
We have provided shade in the south square and the east car park.
