NATURE KNOWS BEST

BRINGING NATURE BACK INTO CITIES

LIFE Archiclima is a project aimed at effectively supporting property managers and owners in building resilience to the threatening effects of climate change.

The service consists in determining the areas of necessary and possible adaptation of large-scale facilities with the use of nature-based solutions. Its culmination is an adaptation plan containing an architectural design that will ensure safety and reduce the negative impact of infrastructure on the climate.

LIFE Archiclima project no. LIFE20 CCA/PL/001573 has received funding from the LIFE Programme of the European Union and from the Polish National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management.

CHALLENGES THAT REQUIRE SOLUTIONS

1

HEAT WAVES

Maintaining the proper temperature of the premises of a given facility means increasing energy costs and CO2 emissions, as well as confronting the growing expectations of the community in terms of environmental care. The risk of blackout during the growing phenomenon of heat waves and regulations of energy consumption at the national level make it necessary to seek new solutions

RAINFALL

Large areas of roofs, squares and parking lots mean high environmental fees for businesses in the form of the so-called rain tax. Flash floods are no longer anomalies and are becoming the seasonal norm. Removal of their effects is compensated by insurance only partially, as it does not compensate for prestige, organizational, environmental and social costs.

URBAN HEAT ISLAND

The accumulation of concrete and asphalt surfaces in the city causes additional heating of the air. The heat accumulates on such hardened surfaces and creates a „urban radiator”. On the other hand, such a phenomenon does not occur in green areas, which makes it easier to function in their surroundings in hot weather. This translates directly into better health of the inhabitants, lower air-conditioning costs and lower emissions of harmful greenhouse gases.

WIND AND STORMS

It is increasingly difficult to protect yourself and your property in the event of extreme weather events. Areas devoid of greenery, exposed, large, flat surfaces of car parks and roofs are places where such phenomena are especially noticeable.

40%

„In January 2022, we recorded 40% more damage than in the same period in 2021. This is just the beginning of the year and the peak of weather anomalies is forecasted to occur in the summer.”

DROUGHT

The drought in Poland is one of the most visible effects of climate change. Expansion of the gray infrastructure, regulation of natural areas, reducing their surface, intensive and frequent procedures to maintain the existing aesthetic standards and putting this aesthetics over the needs of nature only aggravate the problem. It is becoming imperative to change current practices and make better use of rainwater.

“The frequency and intensity of droughts in Poland has become an increasingly important problem in recent years, both for the country’s economy and for the environment. The greater frequency of droughts is the result of the observed climate changes, especially the increase in air temperature during the growing season.”

NATURE-BASED SOLUTIONS

LIFE Archiclima is a program to restore nature and bring life to cities. Nature-based solutions are three of the five climate antidotes according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report in March 2022. These are solutions, the essence of which is to combine the benefits for people and for biodiversity. In Archiclima, we design tailor-made solutions, easy to implement, minimizing costs and tailored to the existing challenges in the management of large-area real estate.

DISCOVER LIFE ARCHICLIMA SOLUTIONS

Services of LIFE Archiclima have been prepared to support owners and managers of large-scale facilities in strategic activities related to safety, resilience and investment attractiveness. They are divided into three complementary areas:

Archiclima ASSESSMENT is a service consisting in the assessment of the adaptation of facilities to climate change. Here, we define the risk related to current and future natural events resulting from climate change and the impact of the facility on the climate.

ARCHICLIMA ASSESSMENT BENEFITS FOR YOUR BUSINESS AND ENVIRONMENT

KNOWLEDGE

Organizing, explaining and combining information about natural events that are important for the facility in the context of their technical conditions. A forecast that facilitates making strategic decisions.

DATA

Collection and development of relevant data for facility operation, maintenance costs, non-financial reporting, external financing, insurance, investments and maintaining competitive attractiveness for customers.

DECREASE OF UNCERTAINTY

Providing a support tool in the process of managing the risk of damage, breakdowns and accidents resulting from heavy rainfall, urban floods, extreme heat, drought and energy crises (so-called blackouts).

ADAPTATION POSSIBILITIES

Supplementing the technical documentation. Indication of the existing possibilities of preventing crisis events and minimizing the negative impact on the environment.

Archiclima PLANNING is a service whose purpose is to prepare a facility adaptation plan towards climate change. The main elements of the plan are nature-based solutions, the implementation of which is aimed at minimizing the risks identified in Archiclima ASSESSMENT. This allows to increase the resilience of the facility and reduce the negative impact of the facility on the natural environment.

BENEFITS OF ARCHICLIMA PLANNING FOR YOUR BUSINESS AND ENVIRONMENT

ADAPTATION PROJECT

Project of adaptation of the facility with technical documentation adapted to the applicable regulations and administrative procedures as well as guidelines for maintaining selected solutions.

RESILIENCE PRESCRIPTION

Elaboration of a method for risk and vulnerability reduction of the facility to natural phenomena and reducing the costs of prevention and damage removal. Obtaining increased credibility on the financial market.

MORE ATTRACTIVENESS

Archiclima project and its communication activities are an important competitive differentiator as well as an important part of the ESG strategy affecting financial and non-financial ratings.

IMAGE

The green infrastructure project is a way to improve the image of premises managed with care for the comfort and safety of people as well as care for the environment and climate.

The RESILIENT ecological labeling system defines the level of resilience of the facility and the flexibility of the system in which the facility operates. The reference point is the current and forecasted phenomena related to climate change. RESILIENT introduces 5 levels of adaptation to climate change resulting from the analysis of conditions in the architectural, energy, management and environmental areas.

Resilient Archiclima

BENEFITS OF RESILIENT LABELING SYSTEM FOR YOUR BUSINESS AND ENVIRONMENT

LABELING

Label confirming the knowledge of the most important issues of risk management and the safety of users of the facility. The image of a responsible and modern manager.

PRESTIGE

Joining the group of the most climate-conscious real estate managers who act for the future and strategically. Confirmation of the quality of management in accordance with ESG, friendly to people and nature.

INVESTMENT ATTRACTIVENESS

Confirmation of compliance with ESG requirements, increasing the chances of external financing and the facility’s ability to maintain key functions and processes in the face of increasing climate change.

COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE

The image of a place consciously managed with care for the environment and people, supported by a developed program of climate promotion and education as well as communication activities of LIFE Archiclima and the European Commission.
